Beginning
with basic instruction on our lake including stroke development,
maneuvers, and gates course practice, the canoeing and kayaking
program moves in carefully supervised stages from flat water to
the many rivers in our area. Campers of all ages and capabilities
can learn the excitement of whitewater paddling.
For
beginners, the first trips are in canoes on gentle rivers where
they learn to read currents, avoid rocks and obstacles, and
maneuver the canoe in flowing water.
As they
gain experience and skill, they gradually expand their horizons
to include swifter and more challenging trips such as the Green,
Tuckaseegee, Nantahala, and Chattooga rivers. Fun, exciting, and
adventurous, these paddling trips are highlights for the boys.
They are an excellent way for a child to learn the lasting rewards
of effort and the importance of teamwork. As paddling skills progress,
campers may choose to begin "decked boating" in kayaks
or c-1's.
