Today was a busy one, with a river trip to the French Broad Section 8, an all-day trip to Looking Glass Rock for climbing, and a mountain bike trip and all day hike to DuPont State Forest right around the corner. We are so fortunate to border the property of this wonderful area for hiking and biking. Tonight we continue with our cabin overnights to the shelters on property. Lakeside goes to Lower Rocky Top, Holiday IV goes to Rocky Springs, Chalet goes to Still Oaks, and Flattop goes to Dogwood Den. It started out a nice 63 degrees this morning with a nice breeze on the lake for the sailors. Throughout the day it did warm up to about 85 degrees.
The group of campers that are here now are an exceptionally nice group of boys. It is clear to me that many of the returning campers are very comfortable with the culture of High Rocks. Our older campers enjoy mentoring the younger campers and thrive on learning to teach the campers, and they act as great role models. The younger first-time campers look up to the older boys. It helps create a very healthy community. It is especially rewarding to see the campers that have grown up here giving back to the High Rocks community. We have 25 campers receiving their 5 year back packs this year and 5 staff receiving their 10 year paddles, handmade by Fritz Orr.
This first week has been very smooth, and everyone has settled in. The week end will be hopping. You will hear more about that tomorrow!
Have a good night!
