The Best Day Yet!

Link to Today’s Pictures

Today was another great day at High Rocks!  It was a beautiful clear sky and cooler temperatures. An all day hike went out today and the paddlers ventured to the French Broad for an all day trip.  The Mountain bikers headed to DuPont for a morning ride on the Lake Imaging Trail.  We are very fortunate to back up to the Dupont State Forest, a favorite mountain bike and hiking area just 10 minutes from camp.  If you get a chance when you come back up to visit, there are some beautiful waterfalls with fairly easy access. The climbers are exploring Horseshoe Rock today for some experience climbing real rock faces.  We had a great wind on the lake this morning for the sailors.  That has been two great days for sailing with wind nearly all day.  The new stand-up paddle boards are a popular addition this summer.  It takes good balance and concentration to maneuver the paddle boards around the lake without falling in!!  Our hope is, for some of the campers who also paddle canoe, to have our first river trip on these boards later this session.

All of the campers have really settled into their routines.  They know what they want to accomplish this session and are focused on getting as much done as they can.  It is great having so many returning campers who have set goals for the summer and are working to achieve them.  The staff is having a great time making that happen for them.  Every camper has different goals.  For some it is climbing the tower for the first time and working to get over their fear of heights.  For others it may be paddling a river they have not done before but have been building skills for many years until they were ready.  And for others it is being away from home for the first time and learning to be more independent and make decisions on their own with help from the counselor.  Whatever the campers want to accomplish we want them to feel supported and to encourage them to try their best even if it does not work the first time.  We are there to back them up when they try again.

Finally, Lakeside, Holiday 1, Foxhollow and Chalet are on their cabin overnight tonight at shelters on the camp property, roasting s’mores and cooking pita pizzas.  That should wrap up just about every cabin for their overnights.  Next week we start or evening “Chill Night” with the cabin groups.  More on that trip later 🙂 .

A special Thanks to Bryan Ham, our photographer, for all his efforts.  I sure have enjoyed the pictures so far this session.

Have a great evening and enjoy today’s pictures.
