The Weather is Great!
June 19, 2013 by Hank

No matter what the weather brings, somebody at High Rocks is happy! If it is dry the climbers and horseback riders are happy. If it is wet the paddlers are happy & the cavers don’t care since they are underground. So far we’ve had a good mix of weather that has kept everyone happy. The guys on the 3-day hike to the Black Balsam Knob area hiked in the rain, but they knew it was coming and were very prepared. The weather looks dry for the next few days, other than the normal possibility of afternoon storms. Tomorrow is another big day with six trips out of camp and a “Cowboy Dinner Ride” in horseback riding.
Our new “Stand Up” paddle boards have been a hit this year. We’ve had a few in the past, but now have a fleet. Today we took our first ever “stand up” whitewater trip. It’s interesting because a lot of early whitewater paddlers in the 1950’s & 1960’s would stand in the canoes. Ray Eaton, a High Rocks counselor many years ago, was often seen standing as he navigated the rapids. Ray is being inducted into the whitewater hall of fame this year. See a video about Ray that includes interviews, early videos, and pictures including several High Rocks campers & staff.
The campers stay pretty busy with activities and trips, so tonight’s “movie night” is a welcome rest! We’ll have the big screen set up in the gym to watch “Ice Age”. There is even a “concession stand” for campers to get popcorn & a drink.
It’s hard to believe we are over halfway through the session!
Take care,
Hank Birdsong
