Cabin Night
July 24, 2014 by Don Gentle

Another great day at High Rocks! Some of our last trips headed out the door this morning, the last full day of activities! Boys in camp were still having a blast. I saw one of the biggest bass of the summer caught today at the “bottomless pond.” He must have been 7 pounds. Horseback riding is getting ready for their “drill team” demonstration where they will show the crowd their control and movement choreographed to music. They sure have worked hard down at horseback riding this session. The skill level of the boys is really impressive! The lake was a flurry of fun this afternoon in the warm summer sun! And, our last matches of the camper-counselor tennis tournament were played today. The final match was a big event for choice period today.
Tonight every cabin headed out on the property to enjoy an evening with just their cabin. Cabin night has been a tradition for about the last ten years. It is a great time for campers to reflect on their time here at High Rocks. Many of the cabin groups seek out some of the coolest features at camp. Rocky Top bald is one of the first venues requested typically. It is a great bald rock formation sitting at about 3200 feet. A wonderful place to watch the sunset, have a quiet sit or even just talk. Some of the other cool places are the top of the climbing tower, float time on the lake, a night at one of our open-air shelters, s’mores at a fire ring, or even just an evening on the water slide. Cabin night is a good time to appreciate all those who have helped you get through the last four weeks.
It sure has been an incredible month and a wonderful two weeks with our Mini II guys. I can’t believe it is wrapping up already. Tomorrow afternoon we will begin our transition process by getting packed up, then one final all-camp color war event will take up the whole time after rest hour. Finally, we will wrap up the session with a campfire, songs, and a story. There will be a large group of boys receiving their 5-year backpack, and 10-year hand made Fritz Orr paddle. I am so excited about tomorrow.
A friendly reminder… Parents’ Day is on Saturday. Please wait until 9:15 to arrive. We will get things going a little after 10:00 with demonstrations, displays, and lunch! Even though we will load up your trunk in the car, I always like to remind folks about stopping by the cabin on closing day to be sure you get everything that is still on your son’s bed before you leave.
Don’t forget, if you enjoyed the pictures, you can still buy a flash drive of over 4500 pictures on closing day. I will put up a closing blog and some color war pictures tomorrow.
Safe travels! I look forward to meeting with all of you.
