Some accounts of recent camp events

Sycamore Flats Trips
The "Square Dance Houligans" were the first age group to take a tubing trip to Sycamore Flats in Pisgah National Forest.  The group cooked out and tubed in the cold stream.  On the way home the group stopped at "Dolly's Ice Cream" for an ice cream cone.  Before the session is over, all age groups will be taking a trip to Sycamore Flats.

Cabin Overnight
Last week each cabin participated in a cabin overnight, sleeping in a three-sided shelter on camp property. Here is an account from 9-year-old camper Tim Deziel:
"I thought the cabin overnight was fun because we made a fire, roasted marshmallows and made s'mores.  We slept outside and heard the animals.  We ate spagetti and rolls and we saw all kinds of plants on the hike, and we got back for breakfast in the morning!!"
Climbing Trip to the "High Rocks"
We have a climbing area at camp we call the "High Rocks".  The campers in our first group to climb there this session were J.C. Collett, Robin Robinson, James Baker, Alan Salgado, Court McNulty, Travis Johnson, and Riley Sapora.  Several more trips will go to the High Rocks before the end of the session.

Counselor Hunt
Sunday brought the annual counselor hunt at Camp High Rocks.  Counselors spread around camp in various obscured location, and eager cabin groups sought out particular counselors that they had been assigned to find.  Flattop II found all their counselors first and gained the reward of first place in line for lunch.

Carnival
Carnival balloons and booths filled the gym and nearby areas while the sounds of victory resounded as whipping cream and water hit their marks.  Campers selected their favorite counselors as targets for the blind-folded whipping cream throw and as the benefit of winning the bean bag toss.  Many campers lined up to try their skill at shaving a balloon covered with Burma shave. Bingo with a twist challenged campers in another corner of the gym as they traveled on all fours from B to O on the color-coded board on the floor.  They could move only one limb at a time as the caller announced the letter and the color for each move.  The inner tube toss, hool-a-hoop toss, bubble pop and a moon walk tested the skills of other carnival revelers.  A snow cone booth and candy bars prizes added to the merriment of the Sunday afternoon activities.

Sunday Campfire
Overlooking the lake, sitting on the rocks beside the fire, campers sang accompanied by the mandolin, guitar, and bass played by multi-talented staff members David Dasher, Tim Carter, and Harold Gertner.  The campfire program featured Clay Griffith's spell-binding tale of "Chicken Heart" as recounted from a childhood memory of a radio story during an evening at home alone.

The following thought for the week was given by Jamie Stead at the end of Sunday night campfire.  He passed the thought to Justin Collmann.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.   Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.  We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be?  Brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?"  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small doesn't serve the world.  There's nothing enlightened about shrinking,  so that other people won't feel insecure around you.  We were born to manifest the glory of God within us.  It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission and to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
