Some accounts of camp events and trips from last week.
 Crafts
In crafts, we've made cool lanyards and some gnarly snow globes.  We've started some radical baskets.  We've also made some friendship bracelets and bead necklaces.  We will also make good-luck Geckos and awesome tie-dye T-shirts.  Soon we will make candles and then regatta boats for the race on the last day of camp.  I think that a lot of people who do arts & crafts will have a lot of fun.  I know that lots of people who do this really fun activity, including us, are always saying that arts & crafts was really fun today.  So we guess that for campers all over High Rocks arts and crafts is a really fun and exciting activity.

Mt. Mitchell 3-day Hike
Led by hiking instructors John Rippy and Grant Irons, the Mt. Mitchell trip left camp.  This group of campers was heading to the highest point east of the Mississippi River.  The group arrived at the trail and started hiking.  They reached their campsite next to a stream and enjoyed a dinner of pita pizzas.
When the group woke up the next morning, they were refreshed for another day of hiking.  Up the trail they went, but something strange they found.  The trail was overgrown.
"It was fun bushwhacking," said Judd Shader.  He was referring to going on this overgrown trail.
Upon returning to the trail head they feasted on macaroni and cheese and waited for the van.  Michael Eblen said, "We got lost, but we had a good time."  The group was forced to leave early and arrived back in camp very late.  The biggest disappointment to this band of campers, though, was that they never made it to the snack bar at the summit.

Happy Hour Climb
After a traditional Saturday breakfast of pancakes, eight campers loaded the van  for a day of climbing on the Ledge at Happy Hour, an exposed rock near Cashiers.   Upon returning at 5:30,  Chris Gorman described the site.  "The cool rock formation could be a dragon or an eagle.  It was a really good view from where we were."

The trip to Happy Hour was awesome.  One of the things that was really cool was how everyone worked together.  Everyone got to climb two routes.  After our peanut butter & jelly sandwich lunch it started thundering.  The entire group got up and left in a matter of minutes.  Overall the trip was really fun.

Camp Cup
The Camp Cup was a canoe gathering of about five camps on the Nantahala River. It was a lot of fun for me because I had never competed in a canoe race before.  Not only did we have a chance to race, we had a lot of fun, and we learned a lot about down river canoeing.

Evening Horseback Ride
It was a lot of fun!  We went on a trail called Still Oaks.  We saw lots of pine trees.  In fact, there were so many we ran into them a lot!  At the end we had s'mores by a campfire.

I also thought it was a lot of fun.  I rode a horse called Beau.  I saw some huckleberries and blackberries.

Stone Mountain Climbing trip
Stone Mountain is a friction climbing mountain that was so much fun!! Friction climbing is using not a lot of grooves in the rock, just using the friction of your hands and shoes to climb up the rock.  My favorite climb was "Strawberry Preserves" because it was high and smooth and had the coolest view.  You felt like you could see the whole world!!

Tsali Mountain Biking Trip
We left early in the morning all geared up with our bikes.  We drove 2-1/2 hours to the long awaited trail head at Tsali State Park.  We stretched for a while and hit the trail.  The entire bike ride took 4 hours.  During the ride we stopped before some technicals (areas that are harder than most) and talked about how to ride them.  When we finished the 11.7 mile ride we ate lunch at a picnic table.  After we ate we hooked our bikes back on the trailer and drove to a nearby lake.  We swam there for about ten minutes and drove back to camp in the van.  We were all starving so we stopped at a nearby Burger King for dinner!  When we all finally arrived back at camp, evening activities had ended, but we weren't sad we were late.  That day was great and was filled with adventure.  I had a great time!

Square Dance
The square dances here at High Rocks are fun.  Our most recent dance was with Rockbrook Camp.  It is really a sight to see all of the guys shower, brush their hair, & not to mention, make sure they smell good so they can get to dance.  At the end of the night, we exchange songs with the ladies.  They sing "We Love You High Rocks, O Yes We Do" to a Bye-Bye Birdie theme, and we sing "Good Night Ladies" which kind of speaks for itself.  So, overall it is a good night for everyone!

The Olympics
At mid-morning on Sunday everyone gathered at the waterfront for the camp-wide olympics.  Campers waited in front of the swim docks to see what traditional, but crazy skit the counselors would come up with.  Finally, from the canoe docks came two tourists from Florida, Francis and Louis.  This mismatched pair of counselors played music on their portable radio, carried lawn chairs, and admired the lake.  Soon two locals, Clem and Cletus, meandered on down with their fishing poles, claiming the lake as their own.  Then the battle began!  The teams were divided into tourists and locals.  Competitions were activities ranging from fire building and relay races, to making the fastest lanyard and silly swimming.  Everyone had a blast; the last competition ending with most everybody leaping into the lake.

Sunday Campfire

Campfire is something everyone looks forward to on Sunday night.  Everyone gathers on campfire hill and we start out by singing songs while we watch the sunset over the mountains.  Following the songs, it is a tradition that we listen to a story.  The story this week was told by Dan Noland about how the Cherokee Indians lived here long ago and how the Europeans tried to take over the land.  He talked about the courage and honor of the Cherokee in the face of destruction of their people.  This is my first year as a counselor at High Rocks and I think campfire night is one of the things that stand out most in my mind.

--Julie Gilbert

The following thought for the week was given by Marshall Alexander at the end of Sunday night campfire.  He passed the thought to David Sugerman.

"Don't worry about failure.  Worry about the chances you will miss when you don't even try."

Upcoming Events

This week will feature many trips away from camp in hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and climbing.  Soccer players will have the opportunity to visit and play at an indoor soccer facility in Asheville.  Crafts projects will include tie-dyes, good luck geckos, regatta boats, batiking, and more!  This week the counselor-camper tennis matches will be going full swing.  Next Saturday night's square dance will be with Keystone camp and Clay Griffith will be telling the campfire story on Sunday evening.
