Pictures from last week

Some accounts of camp events and trips from last week.
 Ropes Course
Several cabin groups were able to complete the High Rocks Ropes Course this week.   Flattop was invited to work the course on Monday and Lakeside campers tested their skills on Tuesday.

We started with talking about equipment, and then practiced the procedures on the grounds course.  When we were ready, we went to the real thing.  Our group got to do both the low and high courses.  The low  was more physically challenging, but I thought they both were fun.  We then ended with the zip line.  AWESOME!!

Togas on Tuesday
The Upper Seniors in Pinnacle marched down the hill in togas to breakfast on Tuesday.   They paraded into the dinning hall in multi-colored togas fashioned from their bed sheets and sporting  a sprig of laurel behind their ears.

It began the night before when Marshall Alexander put on a toga and we laughed at him.  Then we decided to put on our togas and chant, "Toga, toga!"  Marshall then suggested, "Let's wear these to breakfast," and the planning started.  We put leaves all over our cabin and in the morning, we walked side by side chanting, "Toga, toga!" once again.  We walked into breakfast and attracted quite a bit of attention.  It was the Upper Seniors creating a little show!

Tie-dye T-shirts
Crafts shop set up this week for the production of tie-dye T-shirts.  The process took several days to tie, dye, dry, and set the dye with a wash. "It was a swirl of colorful fun and cool for everyone."

2-Day Tsali Mt. Biking
Tsali was a great mountain biking area that was enjoyed by every camper on the trip.  There were varieties of uphills and downhills; each being places to practice biking skills.   The fast single-track was entertaining and challenging.  The chemistry of staff and campers on this trip made it an overall terrific experience.

Pottery
On Tuesday afternoon we went to Highwater Clays to see how they prepare and blend clays.  They showed us how they mix the clay.  They let us feel the clay before and after it was mixed .  Then they showed us the gallery of things that people who use their clay have made.  The trip was interesting and fun.

Rich Mountain Hike
We hiked up Rich Mountain today.  When we were going up hill, it was so steep, I almost fell back.  We also saw a climbing rock called High Rocks.  When we got to the top, we all sat down on a bench.  On the way back down we saw a wild turkey.  The view from the top was beautiful.

Tuckaseigee / Nantahala River Trip
The Tuck-Nanny 2-Day was the best trip yet!  We spent Wednesday on the Tuckaseigee.  We had lots of fun and did everything from sidesurfing to swimming Double Drop, one of the biggest rapids there.  On the Nantahala the water was probably 50 degrees on Thursday.   We had fun all day.  We surfed Whirlpool and ran Nantahala Falls several times.  It was great!
--Elliott Flah

This trip was the most fun trip I've ever been on in the four years I've been here.  The first day we did the Tuck and had fun on the rapids.  We slept at Tsali campground.  The next day we did the Nantahala, and it was even more fun that the Tuck.  The trip was really sweet!

Cold Mountain
The 3-day hiking trip to Cold Mountain was very much fun. We learned about overnight hiking in the woods.  The counselors let us lead the hike and pick which ways to go.  It was harder, but in my opinion, I liked it much better than having a counselor lead.  We also tried solo hiking which is where everybody hikes alone with about a minute in between each other.  I liked it more than hiking together because I noticed a lot  more things such as views, blueberries, and even birds.

First ever Hike to duPont State forest
On Saturday a hike left to explore the duPont trail set up by the CT's (Brian McGuire, Leland Grant, Craig Hay, Jim Warren).  The CT's worked two weeks developing the 1.5 mile trail that connects High Rocks to the state forest.  The hike is a beautiful walk through  lush scenery and trickling streams.  The kids had a great time and had a peaceful hike.  On the way back, the group encountered an afternoon thunderstorm which didn't dampen anybody's spirits.

Three-day Hike
The three day hike was challenging.  We climbed many mountains such as Pilot Mtn. and Chestnut Mtn..  We had a reflection campfire, which we looked back over our many achievements.  The last day we relaxed in the Davidson river and went to Dolly's for ice cream.

Climbing trip to Moore's Wall
Starting a varied climbing trip we visited a boulder field near Boone, NC.  "It was some of the best boldering most of us had ever seen, We didn't stop bouldering until gravity ripped us from the holds."  The next day we got to tour Misty Mountain Threadworks, a climbing gear manufacturer.  It was neat to see the product being made and tested.  The trip continued with a long day of climbing at Moore's Wall near Winston-Salem.  One of the climbs we did, called "Zoo View" was almost completely overhanging for 100 feet.  It was a fun and challenging day of climbing for us all.

Square Dance
On Saturday, we had our last square dance of the summer with Keystone Camp.  Normally, all of Keystone would come to High Rocks but because of the rain, campers were split into two groups, one group stayed at High Rocks while the others traveled to Keystone.    Everyone seemed to be having a blast and their steps looked polished because of their experience from the two previous dances.  The campers were sad knowing that it would probably be the last chance to square dance this year.

Sunday Campfire
There was much consternation amongst campfire traditionalists this Sunday past, as those responsible for the play list eschewed much beloved favorites such as "Country Roads"  and "One Tin Soldier" in favor of obscure and impossible-to-sing Woody Guthrie tunes.  Order was restored to the High Rocks tradition continuum, however, when counselor Alum Clay Griffith (Zoob's brother and progenitor of the Griffith name at High Rocks) returned to tell a classic story of horror and suspense.  "The Chickenheart" was told in classic radio style (complete with sound effects).  "Chicken Heart" is a fictional story from his youth about a scary radio show he would turn on when his parents left him alone at home without a baby sitter.  Clay served on the High Rocks staff for five years, from 1988 to 1992.
In any event, campfire recovered from its rocky musical start and once again proved a fitting end to another great week at High Rocks.  It was wonderful to have Clay playing guitar and telling a story at campfire again.
-Kevin Gaunt

The following thought for the week was given by David Sugerman at the end of Sunday night campfire.  He passed the thought to Aaron Power.

"Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises?  If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.  -Thoreau"
