Backpacking and Hiking Director

We run an intensive program that requires considerable backcountry experience as well as experience teaching skill sessions. A director should have experience with backpacking, camping, teaching skills and lessons, managing staff and gear, as well as other related outdoor skills. NOLS or Outward Bound experience is highly preferred. A majority of our backpacking trips utilize the trails in Pisgah National Forest, though we do also venture into the Nantahala National Forest and Linville Gorge Area.

Responsibilities: Direct a staff of five to six instructors. Instruct outdoor skills and environmental ethics. Create program lesson plans. Lead hiking and backpacking trips up to a maximum of five days in length.

Qualifications: At least 21 years of age with hiking and backpacking experience. A strong desire to work with youth. Outward Bound or NOLS experience highly preferred. Clean driving record and Wilderness First Responder certification.

Benefits: From $370 to $500 per week for the nine week season and one week of orientation, depending on experience and qualifications.Training courses available in late May.
