Backpacking and Hiking Instructor
Instructors should have experience with backpacking, camping, and related outdoor skills. Experiences like NOLS or Outward Bound are a plus. A majority of our backpacking trips utilize the trails in Pisgah National Forest, though we do also venture into the Nantahala National Forest and Linville Gorge Area.
Responsibilities: Hiking instructors teach outdoor skills, environmental ethics, map & compass, and other skills associated with backpacking for campers 7 to 16 years of age. Help lead trips up to a maximum of five days in length. Male applicants would also be cabin counselors for groups of 5-7 boys. Female applicants would have other responsibilities in place of cabin coverage.
Qualifications: At least 19 years of age or rising college sophomore with a strong interest in teaching children. Previous experience and enthusiasm for hiking, backpacking, and learning about the woods.
Benefits: Starting range from $325 to $400 per week for the nine-week season, depending on experience and qualifications. Training courses available in late May. Includes room, board, and free laundry facilities; staff lounge and wireless internet available; extensive professional discounts; an incredible location with over 1000 acres of wilderness; adjacent to Dupont State Forest, and a 15-minute drive to Pisgah National Forest.
