We Get To Choose
July 27, 2022 by Don Gentle
As I walked around camp today, I enjoyed seeing all the learning happening. By design, these boys choose their own activities. They choose the path and how to walk it. Of course, there is guidance and some discussion from a mentor on opinions about how best to succeed. Ultimately, it is up to the individual about where to go next. Will they stumble along the way? I hope so… It sure helps them figure out what works. More importantly, they figure out what does not work.
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, link sausage, oatmeal, scratch-made banana chocolate chip bread, fruit bar, yogurt, and assorted cereals or granola
Lunch: House-made tomato basil or chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese, canned peaches, roasted Brussels sprouts, salad bar, and (if they want) make-your-own sun butter and jelly.
Dinner: Roast Beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, yeast rolls with honey butter, salad bar, rice krispie dessert.
I am sure you have viewed in the pictures that the boys do a rotation on the High Ropes Challenge course. The boys spend an entire morning or afternoon enjoying the obstacles and excitement of the aerial adventure with their cabinmates. It’s always a good time. They will pick up where they left off in their activities the next day.
You will see in tonight’s pictures how busy we are in our instructional activities. The pace is already picking up. Tomorrow, our first off-property trips begin to head out. Canoeing and rock climbing both have trips out. You will hear more about these trips later in the session.
Tonight, we had our next group of cabin overnights head out into the “1000-acre wood.” Foxhollow, Overlook, and Outpost all headed out for overnights. It’s always an adventure and a ton of fun for the guys. Each of our five shelters is situated on the property in a special location that shows the beauty of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Nestled in mixed hardwoods and towering rhododendron, these shelter sites are a young boy’s playground. I look forward to seeing them in the morning.
And to think it is only our second full day of camp! There is so much more to come! It sure is fun having your son here!
Have a great night!
