Good Morning High Rocks!

I enjoyed hearing the first wake-up bell of the session ring this morning.  In recent years it has been immediately followed by an energetic “GOOD MORNING HIGH ROCKS.”  It’s been something of a modern tradition that has caught on over the years.  The most excited person lately has been Nate our Camp Chef and kitchen manager.  He loves to get out and ring the bell in the morning!  At times there are a few staff and even a group of campers.  What a pleasing echo across the lake for the morning!

That first morning is always fun to hear about. Sleep stories are varied a bit as the guys adjust to their new home.  The boys all made it up to breakfast where I made a point to sit with a table of guys to hear about the experience.

Morning assembly was up next. The ever-important motion song is a key part of our day. Assembly serves several purposes, but mostly it’s about getting our bodies and minds ready for the day. We then talked a little bit about cabin clean-up as our inspector gave the boys some feedback about their morning duties. Outpost I made Cabin of the Day.  They got to hang out with Larry, the bedazzled flamingo trophy for the day.  They will have to get the COD again if they want to keep it.

Breakfast: Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Grits, Sausage Gravy, scratch-made buttermilk biscuits, fruit bar, and assorted cereals.

Lunch: Taco Tuesday!  Ground beef, black beans, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, corn salad, salsa, fresh jalapenos, corn chips, and salad bar.

Dinner: Grilled chicken, chimichurri sauce, rice, grilled squash and onions, scratch-made focaccia bread, salad bar, and scratch-made brownies.

The boys continued to rotate through activities with their cabin groups all morning Sprucepine was the first cabin group to spend the morning on the High Rocks Challenge Course.  They moved through several obstacles and then were able to hit the zipline for a glorious finish. The brief free time before lunch allowed the guys to play some disc golf, head to the gym, or hit the camp store for some High Rocks merchandise.

The afternoon brought much of the same as we all hit a few more activities and then a longer free time.

Tonight, we all headed over to the activity field for a wonderful slip and slide evening paired with Italian ice for snack.  It was then back to our cabins around 8 pm to run through showers, cabin meetings, and then lights out.  I enjoyed hearing the counselors reading to their campers as I walked through the field after lights out. It sure was a fun day!
