Mondays always start with a bang. It’s like the beginning of a horse race as all these “trip-eager” boys who were all stuck on our 1000-acre facility all weekend feel like they need to get out and do something. I know, it sounds awful being “stuck” here! Anyhow, we tend to have all sorts of boys heading out on trips on the second Monday of the session. Their skills are just starting to build, so it is time to test them out!
Our climbers had a trip out to Looking Glass Rock today. A small group headed out for a wonderful day of fun.
Our paddlers got up early to eat and were down the road before the first breakfast bell rang. They were off to the Nantahala River! It is a great place to learn for our kayakers who are looking to step it up a little. They will be gone for two days on this trip. It should be a lot of fun with some stories when they get back.
Hiking headed over to Dupont for a waterfall hike and Mountain biking was also in Dupont on the other side doing some great trails riding.
If you are still staring at those Hillside boys above, well they had a morning adventure on the High Challenge Course.
On a side note, (and I may be opening myself up for a load of trouble) if you have not seen pictures of your son there are a couple of things that can help and a few things to consider. First, “the help.” Send a letter/email and remind your son to step out when they see the photographer. You may notice that some boys have a knack for the “photo shoot,” like a model uses the runway. Others, are more into what they are doing and may not be as interested in getting in front of the camera. Again, the best help is to ask them in a letter. Second, I can help you if you are feeling like you have not seen your son. Drop me a secret email. I can pass that on to Sinait, our fine photographer. She does a great job and would definitely catch your boy. A couple of items to consider. First, your son may be on a trip or even multiple trips. If he is in rock climbing, paddling, hiking, or mountain biking he is likely to be out on a trip from time to time. The second item to consider is that as boys reach their teenage years they often feel a little “too cool for school” when it comes to pictures. Again, Sinait is doing a great job at catching them in action, but it is a lot of running to catch every activity every day.
Age Group 1 (Hillside and Connestee): Spent the evening on the waterslide.
Age Group 2 (Foxhollow and Lakeside): Ate dinner a little early and then headed out to Sliding Rock and Dolly’s for their Chill Night.
Age Group III (Chalet and Windswept): Spent the evening doing games on the Activity Field.
Age Group IV (Flattop and Overlook): Headed down to the canoe docks for Canoe Fill-Ups.
Age Group V (Outpost and Sprucepine) and Age Group VI (Pinnacle, Lookout, and Halfway): Spent the evening doing some square dance practice for our upcoming event on Saturday with Camp Illahee.
It is not too early to start thinking about next summer. If you have friends that may be interested, the summer is THE best time to see camp in all its glory. If you time it right while all the boys are out in their activities, prospective families can speak with the staff and campers as they move around High Rocks to see how our community runs. It is a great experience. Spread the word! Here is the tour sign-up link. You can also just give us a call to schedule a tour.
More adventures tomorrow!
All the best,
Don Gentle
