Swinging into the Weekend

I don’t know if I’m acclimating to the heat or if it was just a bit cooler today, but this morning was nice on top of the mountain. A light breeze and some tired campers made for a rather peaceful start to our Friday, and the end to our “work” week.

The impending hoopla of the 4th was already permeating the day, mostly with anticipation. In what is now a regular rhythm, beds were made, cabins were cleaned, and up the crowd came to breakfast. A slew of biscuits, sausages, eggs, gravy, berries, yogurt, and cereals awaited… and was quickly slain by appetites made larger with honest camp living.

Then an assembly of music and special happenings before the day launched for real. Our one trip today was a climbing crew making for Cedar Rock, feeling confident that they would have clear weather and would be away from the crowds flooding our region for this weekend. They were successful in both veins and had a good day out, albeit while drinking lots of water in the midday heat.

That heat is always less on top of the mountain, but the pleasant morning gave way to an afternoon that begged for staying cool. Activities were cleverly pivoting to lake-centered events that would continue the action in a splashy way. A group of our hard core fitness fellows were making use of paddleboards and struggling for balance during exercises. Climbers were doing just that, but on the iceberg before jumping off. The rope swing was in constant use, while canoers and sailors were doing their usual. It was notable, however, how many times the sailboats heeled to the point of tipping over and spilling all of their occupants in the water. Again, and again, and again.

Age Groups Evening Program

Anytime our campers have the opportunity for agency here at camp, they seize it. Partly because it is fun to pick your own destiny, partly because they become used to having that sort of input to their experience. At dinner, a choice was presented to camp which was a joyful surprise. The evening offerings tonight were a grab bag of options that guys could pick from. The rope swing and waterslide were both open. Tennis courts were happening and are always a draw regardless of time or heat of day. The disc golf course was in play, and soccer was happening on the field in solidarity with the World Cup. That flexible and open way of finishing the week felt right and the evening went smoothly towards a well-deserved bedtime to get ready for tomorrow’s big events.

Have a good evening and may you be anticipating a 4th of July like we are tonight!
