Waikiki Wednesday

It is a true adventure here every day.  Some of the time just getting ready for the day is an adventure.  I enjoyed cruising through the cabins during clean-up time this morning. Many of the young guys are doing their best to just get their clothes on straight, let alone get the bed made and help out with group chores.  What I enjoyed this morning was watching the boys help each other get those top bunks made.  It’s hard enough to get a bottom bunk sorted.  The top bunk is a pretty big challenge.  My favorite is the “make the bed while you are sleeping in it” method.  I feel like I might have done this growing up as well.  I’m sure you have seen it.  Why not, it really appears to make sense.  Lay down and pull up all the covers around you, flatten out the edges and make it pretty, and then try to slide out without disturbing anything.  Again, it works pretty well on the ground level.  It’s a bit more of a challenge when you are on top.  These boys worked through it pretty well.  Don’t let them fool you when they get home.  They can make their bed pretty well.

The morning was filled with some more rotations including horseback riding, fishing, sailing, climbing tower, canoeing, hiking, and pottery.  The boys are glazing pieces that they will be able to bring home.  It’s a real treat!

My favorite has been choice period at 5pm.  A big group continues to rock it out down at canoe fill-ups!  There was also mountain biking, and disc golf this afternoon.

You can’t beat the Hawaiian Shirts when it comes to pictures along with yesterday’s tie dyes, the pictures are busting with color! I love a theme day like that!

Today's Lesson

So does summer camp have to be fun all the time? It would be easy to say yes, but the magic is in the truth that it isn’t always fun or easy. It sure is worth it, though. What I am trying to say is while camp life at High Rocks is awesome, it is also educational.  Sometimes that education can be frustrating and even difficult.  For some of the youngest boys in this session, the hardest part was getting out of the car on opening day.  The learning continues every day as they not only learn skills in their activities, but also learn how to interact with one another.  The challenges of living with six other people that are not your family members should not be overlooked.  While the cabin experience can be fun, it can also be challenging. I’m pretty sure your son did not say that the first thing on his list for coming to camp was to learn how to live with six other boys.  The cabin experience also holds some of their greatest memories.  You can’t have one without the other. It is way more than an amusement park.

Larry and Cabin of the Day

I’m not sure who is more excited, the boys or the counselors.  Of course, Larry is excited!  Let’s here it for Flattop II !!!

Evening Program

End Game

After a full day of activities, the evening wrapped up with a high energy event called End Games. With much paint and whooping/yelling, two teams divided and commenced a game essentially of capture-the-flag with several additional layers. It was a hit, and you could hear the noise generated all around camp. Then on to evening snack to let the blood cool down a bit before heading back to cabins for the nightly call-to-quarters routine.

We sure are enjoying your boys! I hope to have you tune in again tomorrow. It’s going to be great!
