It was another great day on the mountain. I enjoyed seeing these new mini-men begin to figure out a few skills and other items in their activities. Most of them jumped on the Waikiki Wednesday theme day. You will see a number of Hawaiian-themed shirts in the images today.
We had all sorts of trips out today. Mountain biking headed to Dupont for a good rip. Canoeing was out on The Tuckaseegee River. Rock climbign was in Pisgah National Forest at Cove Creek (some pictures up tomorrow), and Overlook was on the ropes course. The weather appears to be back to normal. Not too hot, not too wet, but just mountain right!
First Time Parents, the first letters from the Mini II campers should be arriving home soon. Some of you may find the first letter could talk about some homesickness. My guess is that they are over it by now. As we mentioned in most of our information, it is an important part of growing up. Don’t forget that an encouraging letter focusing on their achievements is the best tool. Again, I feel like these boys are really rolling in camp right now. I just wanted to set you up for success. Please let me know if you have any concerns.
Many of the four-week guys are in what I call “The Grit” of the camp session. It’s that time during the session when they have a pretty good sense of everything and know exactly what they want. They are also working hard on their progression levels and at several goals in their activities. They have this sort of winded, rough, grizzled look about them. Their hair has taken on a new shape of its own. Mostly, because it is about time for a haircut. Their clothes are clean, but they keep trying to wear that same favorite shirt like it’s an important piece of armor. Their shoes have seen more mileage than the rest of the year combined, and they do not usually dry all the way, so they are also looking a little rough. You think they care??? They are certainly all that, they are also having a blast hoping it will never end! The general thought is that we can rest AFTER camp.
The cabin overnight has been happening almost since Camp High Rocks began. The goal still today is that everyone has at least one overnight camping experience. Is it a little outside of their comfort zones? Certainly for some. The boys all hike out to one of our five shelters on the 1100-acre property. The hike varies and so does the shelter. They will spend the night having a dinner of pita pizzas, some time around the fire, and some smores for sure. The time together is important. But the time in the woods is exactly the “grit” these boys need. They return just before breakfast tomorrow. It sure is a wonderful event for these guys. And you know what? That smalll cabin filled with 7 guys, a tiny bathroom, and a foam mattress will feel amazing tomorrow night.
Age Group 1 (Hillside, Connestee, and Lakeside): Lakeside is on their cabin overnight while Hillside and Connestee had games on the Activity Field.
Age Group II (Flattop and Foxhollow): Flattop headed out on their cabin overnight. Foxhollow did some dodgeball in the gym.
Age Group III (Chalet I and Windswept): Games on the Soccer Field.
Age Group IV (Chalet II and Overlook): Waterslide and Rope Swing!
Age Group V (Pinnacle, Outpost and Sprucepine): Canoe Fill Ups! Grab four dudes, hand them some bailers and buckets, then go try to sink eveyone else’s boat. Complete Chaos!
Age Group VI (Lookout and Halfway): These guys enjoyed an evening on the links. Yep, they played golf across the street at our beautiful Sherwood Golf Course. The boys eat early and head over. They typically get in around 10-12 holes and really enjoy the evening. They pulled in just about dark and grabbed quick snack before calling it a night.
That’s all for today. Enjoy the pictures. Out phtographer took a fulltime job, so she left early and have had to make ends work. We now have a couple othr folks helping out, so I think we are back in the good! Have a great night!
