This morning was sunny and breezy to start things off. I found myself chatting with some guys waiting outside the dining hall for an early breakfast. All of us were commenting on how delightful it felt, so much so that a few guys had sweatshirts on as they were easing into their day and preparing for the upcoming travels.
Our earliest departers were heading out fast after that early and cool breakfast. A group of paddlers made for the Nantahala for a full day running some fun and fast water. It’s a fun, and popular, stretch of water that allowed our guys to push their skills while also seeing a lot of other whitewater enthusiasts doing their thing.
The paddlers were gone by the time the rest of camp made it to their own first meal of the day. Eggs, sausage, breakfast potatoes, fruits, yogurts, cereals… it was a good start for a busy schedule coming. This was the last day of our camp “work week” and our campers were throwing themselves into activities to get things accomplished as we head into our last weekend of the session.
A variety of different areas in camp were offering focused opportunities to work on progression skills and get goals checked off. This was in addition to the normal plan and so things were humming. Horseback riders were working in the rings and some hit the trails for an adventurous experience with no outside rail to contain them. Mountain bikers and mountaineers were also on the trails and the happy noise of our guys was echoing through the woods for most of the day.
In pottery, classes were finishing up some chess set challenges with each set following a particular theme. I walked in to find a junk food set taking shape and it was remarkably well done, so much so it got me thinking about lunch!
Sandwiches, salads, veggies, and some of the best mac-n-cheese I’ve had in a while greeted us for the midday meal before a well-deserved rest hour. Post rest, a large group of our tennis players headed to Camp Illahee for a focused tennis clinic and then games. It was a hit, with our fellas coming back quite impressed at the skill level they encountered. They did a wonderful job hanging in there, and a wonderful job representing High Rocks well while spending so much time in another program.
