Another exciting Saturday at Camp High Rocks. While this is the only Saturday for our Mini II guys, we have had a few in our four week session. Saturdays are a great time to regroup, have a litttle fun in our activities, and enjoy
Hiking enjoyed some car camping days. Picture a drive-in campground and you probably have the idea. Lawn games, music, a hillbilly hot tub (pick-up filled with water), and smores around the fire. Add a little music, and it was just nice to be around each other. The waterfront was filled with a sort of pirate day with sailboats tipping over and boys capsizing about the lake. Climbing had some cool games in the bouldering cave. It was almost a freeze frame, redlight-green light thing. It helped the boys practice moving along the wall and was a lot of fun. Horseback had some games aroudn the ring going on as well. I even saw a trail ride going on out there.
A prefect thunderstorm rolled in around lunch and rest hour but ended just in time for afternoon activities. We are thankful for our location, the boys, and all our staff.
Life at High Rocks is about being present in the moment and living. Without the distractions from electronics, politics, and the stresses we put upon our daily routine, you can get down to living. I really enjoy watching it all happen around me. We are into the “meat” of the session now. While I don’t want to be the one to shock you, it’s not always easy. For some boys, just being here is a huge step. For others, it may be going off the rope swing for the first time or getting to the top of the tower. I tell these boys time and time again to “embrace the discomfort.” That is where life is happening. The sweet spot is right at the edge of the discomfort where you feel a little uneasy, but not gripped with fear. If you don’t learn to handle the discomfort, it will all become gripping fear. Anyhow, what I am trying to say is I enjoy watching these boys face some fears, work through some frustration, and have some success. it’s about the space we create for these boys. It’s purposeful and it works. Our staff are very much in tune with the process and are there to help along the way. Check out the successes in the pictures today.
The mountain bike crew was working on wheelies but they also had some obstacles out today. The teeter totter is probably the most formidible looking one. It’s a tight ballance of having enough speed to get up but not too much that you launch yourself into the air. Once you just get past halfway, you roll safely to the groung. It’s all about rhythm and poise.
We enjoyed a little time with the girls of Keystone Camp for girls this evening. I was very impressed with the ladies that came our way this evening. We did some traditional square dances and then a bunch of the popular line dances. It’s always a fun auckward forced social event. I love it!
Sunday is upon us tomorrow. Bascially, it is a day of rest. Just you wait and see the fun we are going to have! Thanks for being here.
